Skanska secures $163m university construction project in Virginia

1 October 2026

Skanska has secured a USD 163 million contract from the University of Mary Washington for a major redevelopment of academic and cultural facilities in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The contract, equivalent to approximately SEK 1.5 billion, will be included in Skanska’s US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.

The project combines new construction with the renovation of existing university property. Skanska will build a multi-storey theatre of approximately 6,300 sqm containing a 293-seat performance hall, together with associated site development, infrastructure and interior works.

Around 7,600 sqm of the university’s existing fine arts buildings will also be renovated, while approximately 800 sqm of additional space will be constructed. The programme therefore combines a substantial new cultural venue with the modernisation and expansion of the university’s existing academic facilities.

Work on the project has already begun, with the overall construction and renovation programme scheduled for completion in February 2030. The USD 163 million award adds another significant education-sector project to Skanska’s US construction portfolio.
