Skanska has secured a USD 110 million contract from Renton School District to build a new high school campus in Renton, Washington, as the district advances a major programme of investment in its education infrastructure. The contract, equivalent to approximately SEK 1.0 billion, will be recorded in Skanska’s US order intake for the third quarter of 2026.
The new Renton High School will provide approximately 32,500 sqm of space across three storeys and will accommodate up to 1,600 students. It is being developed on an enlarged site of around 33 acres occupied by the existing school, roughly 10 miles southeast of central Seattle.
The campus will combine conventional teaching areas with facilities for career and technical education, science, art and other specialist subjects. Plans also include a library, dining and communal areas, health and student-support facilities, gymnasiums and upgraded outdoor sports infrastructure, including baseball and softball facilities and a practice field for football and soccer.
Construction will be carried out in stages while the existing high school remains operational. Much of the current campus will eventually be demolished, although the historic section dating from the 1930s and the IKEA Performing Arts Center will be retained. State planning documentation also shows that the redevelopment involves a broader reorganisation of the site, including new sports facilities, parking and access infrastructure.
The USD 110 million Skanska contract represents part of a considerably larger investment in the Renton High School campus rather than the entire cost of the redevelopment. Earlier Renton School District capital planning documents placed the project budget at USD 314 million, while subsequent public planning documents have indicated higher overall allocations as the project has developed. The investment forms part of a USD 676 million construction and improvement bond approved by district voters in November 2022.
Renton High School is the district’s oldest high school. Its original building opened in 1911 and was replaced in 1932, with the campus subsequently expanded and renovated several times. The redevelopment is intended to replace much of the ageing infrastructure while preserving historically significant parts of the site.
Work is already underway, with the new school scheduled to open in autumn 2029. The project adds another substantial public-sector development to Skanska’s US construction portfolio while demonstrating the scale of capital being directed into the modernisation of education infrastructure in the Seattle metropolitan area.
