Energy consumption across Poland’s residential sector increased in 2025 as the country’s electricity, district-heating and gas infrastructure continued to serve a growing number of households and buildings. Household electricity consumption reached 30,727.6 GWh during the year, an increase of 1.1% compared with 2024. The number of electricity customers rose by 1% to approximately 16.77 million, meaning consumption per customer was broadly stable at 1,832.8 kWh.
There remained a significant difference between urban and rural households. Average electricity consumption per customer reached 2,277.1 kWh in rural areas compared with 1,609.5 kWh in cities. On a per-capita basis, electricity consumption increased by 1.5% nationally to 821.5 kWh.
A stronger increase was recorded in residential heating. Poland’s heat-supply infrastructure extended to almost 25,969 km at the end of 2025, although the network grew by only 0.2% during the year. Around 96% of the infrastructure was concentrated in urban areas, reflecting the importance of centralised heating systems to Poland’s cities. Connections between the heating network and buildings extended to approximately 9,012 km, increasing by 0.3% from 2024. The expansion was concentrated in urban locations, while the length of connections in rural areas declined.
The amount of heat supplied increased much faster than the network itself. A total of 193.9 PJ was sold during 2025, up 7.4% year-on-year. Residential buildings accounted for 152.4 PJ, representing almost 79% of the total and an increase of 7.5% compared with the previous year. Almost all heat supplied through these systems continued to be consumed in urban areas.
Poland’s gas infrastructure also expanded. The network reached approximately 178,300 km by the end of 2025, around 1,700 km more than a year earlier. The number of connections serving residential and non-residential buildings increased by 1.9% to approximately 3.62 million. Household gas consumption reached 57,692.3 GWh, 5.7% above the 2024 level, while the number of customers increased by 1.6% to just over nine million. Rural consumption increased by 6.3%, compared with growth of 5.4% in urban areas.
The differences between cities and rural locations are also visible in individual household consumption. Rural gas customers used an average of 10,589.5 kWh during the year, almost twice the 5,478.1 kWh recorded for urban customers. Urban households nevertheless represented more than four-fifths of all customers connected to the gas network.
The infrastructure figures come as Poland’s residential stock continues to expand. Separate Statistics Poland data shows that the country had approximately 16.16 million dwellings at the end of 2025, an increase of around 196,500 homes during the year. Almost 11 million dwellings were located in cities and more than 5.2 million in rural areas.
For the property sector, the figures illustrate the scale of utility infrastructure supporting Poland’s residential market. Electricity demand increased broadly in line with customer numbers, while heat and gas consumption rose considerably faster during 2025. The data does not establish how much of the increase was caused by new housing, weather conditions or changes in household behaviour, so the higher consumption cannot be attributed directly to residential development.
Nevertheless, the figures show that Poland’s expanding housing stock is operating alongside continued demand for electricity, heating and gas infrastructure. For residential development, the availability and capacity of utility networks, together with the longer-term need to modernise energy systems, remain important considerations as new housing is added to the market.
